If you visit any betting sites in Nigeria, you will immediately notice a large amount of number on your screen. What do all these numbers represent and how do they influence the bets you make? Let us find out.

Betting numbers explained

Understanding the betting numbers is half the job

1. Betting Odds: The Numbers Represent Value

Betting odds are the most important numbers you will need to understand in a sports betting site. Without understanding odds, punters would not know how much they stand to win and it would be impossible to decide whether a bet is worth making.

Our betting odds guide has the betting odds explained to the slightest detail, but we will recap the most important aspects of it here as well. There are three different formats of betting odds. The three formats are:

  • Decimal Odds: 2.00
  • Fractional Odds: 1/1
  • American Odds: +100

All three examples above mean that a bet on the selection would yield double money. In decimal odds, the number represents the number of betting units a bettor stands to win. In the fractional odds, the number represents stake/potential win. In American odds, the number represents how much money a bettor stands to win if they bet $100 on the selection. In the above example, betting $100 would yield in a $100 profit each time.

2. 1×2 Betting Explained

The most basic format of betting, 1×2 betting is the one that you need to understand first. When you load up any of the world’s best sports betting sites, you will be presented with a screen full of betting odds for the 1×2 markets in countless sports matches.

1x2 Betting Explained

1×2 betting market at William Hill

1×2 sports betting market allows users to bet on the winner of the match. The 1 represents a home win, the 2 represents an away win, while an x represents a draw, in sports where draw is possible. In some sports, like tennis, this market becomes a 12 market and you can learn more about this in our tennis live betting strategies guide.

1×2 betting is the most common type of sports betting for a good reason. It is simple, it is easy to understand and the winner is always determined at the end of the match. However, with the winner sometimes being so easy to predict, the 1×2 market can become useless as betting on it will give you no value.

3. Handicap Betting: Bet any Match at Fair Prices

As we already mentioned, the 1×2 market can sometimes leave you wanting for bets, as betting in matches where one team is a big favorite does not make too much sense. Instead, you can make a handicap bet. There are two types of handicap betting often used in sportsbooks and these are Asian Handicap and European Handicap.

Asian Handicap is the most commonly used handicap market and one you will often find in our betting tips. When you bet with a handicap, one of the competing teams basically starts the match with a certain number of goals or points. This way, you are in fact betting that a team will not lose by a certain margin or that they will lose by a margin greater than the one you are betting on. In either case you get better odds.

For instance, let us say that Spain is playing Gibraltar in the World Cup Qualifiers. Clearly, Spain is going to win a huge percentage of the time and the betting odds on the 1×2 market would be laughably low. Instead, you can bet on Spain to win by more than 4 goals by making a handicap bet and giving Gibraltar a 4.5 goal head start.

In this case the bet you would pick is:

Spain: AH – 4.5

Handicap betting is fantastic for other sports like baseball, American football and basketball as well as you get to bet on any match and you can try to find value in this market instead of simply betting on the heavy favorites to win the game.

4. Over/Under Betting

The over/under market is another market where many professional sports bettors try to find some value. Examples of over/under betting can be found in many different sports. To give you a quick illustration, here are a couple of examples:

  • Soccer: Manchester United v Chelsea – Over 2.5 Goals
  • Basketball: Real Madrid v CSKA Moscov – Under 150.5 Points

In our soccer example, it would take three goals on the Manchester United v Chelsea match for the bet to be a winner. In the basketball example, Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow would need to score a total of 151 points in the match to make the bet a winner. The over/under market also applies to other things such as the number of corners or yellow cards in a soccer match etc.

Conclusion: Working with the Numbers

Now that you have a basic idea of what all these number represent, it is time to start applying them. You will need to get a good grasp on each of the numbers involved in sports betting and think even quicker if you try betting at some of the live betting sites in Nigeria. In either case, your foundations are ready and it is time to start building on them.
